Fundamental to reading is the ability to interpret and engage with language for the purpose of acquiring or gaining meaning. For Canadians who are blind, that interpretation and representation of language is gained through reading and writing braille. Braille is a fundamental and viable reading medium, opening doors and providing an option for a personal interpretation of the written material. Braille is not just a tool for literacy, but is the essence of literacy for many Canadians.
